Surviving each day feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, anxious, unhappy, unwell or just not right doesn’t cut it for us! Our mission is to help you to feel on top of the world each day!
So, who are we and how did we get here?
We are a Sydney based family on a life-long journey to learn, live and cultivate health and wellness for our family and community. At Thriving People, we hope to share the knowledge and the hand-made products that we create that have helped our family thrive, in the hope that it inspires you to join us on this journey towards better health for you and yours!
I have always been interested in how to achieve “good health”. On becoming a mum, this interest became an obsession as I saw first hand the power of ‘food as medicine’. I left behind a corporate career to study and pursue my passion of nutrition, becoming a certified Health Coach through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition.
Here, I learnt the basic ingredients to health, of which food is but one of them. I believe we all have this innate knowledge but in the busyness, noise and toxicity of our modern existence, this wisdom can sometimes be lost.
Nutritious whole-foods, clean water, restorative sleep, exercise, a fulfilling career, finances that allow you to live the life you desire, spirituality, connection to nature and positive, loving relationships are the key ingredients to wellness. That’s it! Go forth and thrive! But it’s not always that easy, right?
As Dr Libby Weaver puts it, “why do we do what we do, when we know what we know?” Eg binge watch Netflix into the early hours of the morning, choose the chocolate over the apple, have a few too many, a bit too often – when we know all are in some way deleterious to our health and wellbeing? The secret, is in taking small steps and having strong support. That’s where Thriving People can help! When you know how to feels to thrive, rather than just survive – that becomes your motivation. Our aim is to help you discover and implement sustainable lifestyle changes that will see you reach your wellness goals and make them stick for good. Learn more about our Health Coaching Services.
So, getting back to food. This is where it all began for us. The importance of food is paramount. With every bite, we either nourish our bodies or create a state of imbalance, deficiency and dis-ease.
The current state of health for the vast majority of the population in Western countries is particularly grim. We seem to be over-fed and under-nourished. Many people today are suffering from chronic diseases; diabetes, heart disease, cancer, anxiety and depression, autoimmunity and the list goes on. Amongst kids, it is estimated that 1 in 2 are suffering with a chronic illness; type 2 diabetes, obesity, allergies, asthma, ADHD, autoimmune conditions and even non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is on the rise!
How did we get here? In modern times, we are largely living in a toxic soup, from the air that we breath, the water we drink, the chronic levels of stress that we experience on a daily basis (enduring Sydney traffic on the morning commute can cause cortisol – our primary stress hormone to skyrocket), our dependence on pharmaceuticals, the explosion of plastics and chemicals into our daily life, our disconnection to nature, to our pesticide laden produce and the prevalence of “fake foods”.
We all recognise the usual “junk food” culprits but most packaged foods on supermarket shelves are either nutritionally void, or they are full of sugar, additives, preservatives and trans fats. What is worse is that these fake foods are usually designed in labs by food scientists to be as addictive as possible and have big food corporation dollars to falsely market these foods as “healthful”. Scandalous!
These “fake foods” are so far away from how they were intended in nature and their effect on our health is far from harmless.
The good news is that food changes everything. Food can be your medicine. Nutrient density is so important, especially to fuel our kids through their formative years, the most rapid period of their growth and development. Good nutrition determines energy, concentration, emotional stability, immunity and lays the foundation – the blueprint for their health in later life.
The solution is pretty simple. When in doubt, just eat real, whole foods. Organic fruit and veg where possible, pasture-raised meat, wild caught seafood, properly prepared seeds, nuts and grains (if you can tolerate them) is a good starting point. Home cooked meals from scratch, just like our grandparents used to do!
This is what fuels our ambition to help raise awareness about the importance of real food and to help our kids foster a love of real foods early.
So now, we get the importance of what goes into our body, but what about what goes on our body?? Cue our soapy story…
Natural Hand-Made Soap – Our Soapy Story
Let’s set the scene. Consider this:
- As much as 60% of your topical skin-care products can be absorbed through the skin (the body’s largest organ) – directly into your bloodstream!
- According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), “Today there are very few true soaps on the market. Most body cleansers, both liquid and solid, are actually synthetic detergent products.’
- Most mass-produced, synthetic soaps are stripped of their glycerin content. Glycerin is the superstar ingredient of natural soap in it’s unrivalled moisturising and soothing qualities. To mimic the action of glycerin in synthetic soaps, a chemical cocktail is added to the mix including sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) which can cause skin irritation and parabens, which have been linked to cancer.
- Parabens in soap and skin-care products are also endocrine disruptors meaning they muck up your hormones and have the potential to cause thyroid issues among other things
- According to a study conducted by ACLA, liquid soap has 10x the carbon footprint of bar soap, with the two major culprits being the chemicals that are used to manufacture liquid soap, and the fact that the soap is packaged in wasteful plastic.
- Microbeads (minuscule pieces of plastic) found in some scrubs, shower gels and toothpastes are accumulating in the world’s oceans, lakes and estuaries, harming marine life and entering the food chain
- Aluminium found in most anti-perspirant deodorants has been linked to breast cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and reproductive issues
So, after having acquired this knowledge we pretty swiftly ended up with a bin full of once loved soap and skincare products. In the process, we were also disappointed to see the amount of plastic packaging we were sending straight to landfill. Rather than dwell in the doldrums of the situation, we decided to focus our attention on creating a solution. Let’s make our own soap we said! And so our soaping journey began.
Inspired by the healing power of nature, we set out to create hand-made soap that not only cleansed but actually nourished our body and soul!! Our soaps are handcrafted using only natural ingredients – no fake colours, no fake smells and no endocrine disrupting chemicals! Just glorious and healing ingredients; olive, coconut, hemp and castor oils together with Shea butter, essential oils, wildcrafted botanicals and naturally coloured using clays and pigments from the earth!!
We are sure that the smell, the lather and the feel of using one of these natural, hand-made soap bars on your body will surely help set you on your path to thriving!
